Supporting upper Peninsula Land Conservancy
by Mike OSullivan August 18, 2024
Marquette, MI, USA--This morning I thoroughly enjoyed hiking with a party of all ages while learning about mushrooms from experts within Vielmetti-Peters Nature Reserve protected by Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy (UPLC). The Reserve entrance is just a short way off Brickyard Road in Marquette. The new parking area is open thanks to UPLC staff and volunteers.
The Vielmetti-Peters Nature Reserve is one of 25 experimental reserves protected by UPLC. Adam Berger, UPLC board member, and Ray Bush, local mushroom expert, led our party through well-maintained trails helping us to identify different types of mushrooms. Participants also received a colorful handout with pictures and information about many different mushroom varieties.
Watch the UPLC Events page to participate in forest hikes and educational opportunities guided by local land experts.
Consider supporting UPLC's efforts to expand the existing trail system at Vielmetti-Peters Nature Reserve into the newly protected The Dead River Community Forest (DRCF).
The Dead River was called both Jiibay-Manidoo-Ziibi, meaning the river of the spirits or the river of ghosts, and Noquemanon-Ziibi, river of the berry patch of the Noquet people.
Visit the UPLC web site to learn more about donating, participating, and volunteering.
